"Opportunities for Collaboration
in the Biophotonics Arena"
March 29, 2006

IPCA stakeholders and members from Industry, universities, and government laboratories met to present and discuss current issues in the biophotonics fields. The goal of this workshop was to stimulate new commercialization opportunities among both bio and photonic researchers, as these two disciplines converge and offer exciting new possibilities for research and discovery. It is widely accepted that the next major market opportunity will be in the biophotonics area. This workshop facilitated face-to-face discussions between IPCA stakeholders, members and a sponsor organization - ELCAN Optical Technologies a division of Raytheon.

NOTE: Copies of the presentations from this event will be posted soon. Thanks!

About Elcan Optical:
http://elcan.phpinternet.com/www/ELCAN_2_0_Index.htm

Purpose

Elcan is seeking to explore applications that fall within the biophotonics / nanophotonics fields and that may leverage Elcan's core competencies in traditional optics. Elcan is looking to update its own technology roadmap that may include technologies provided by a strategic partnership involving IPCA stakeholders or members.

Workshop Objective

We had a large optics player looking to explore and partner in creating new opportunities in the "Biophotonics" area. Elcan/Raytheon located in Midland, Ontario, are interested in discussing opportunities to leverage its core competencies in "traditional optics" and create unique and innovative biophotonics solutions. Discussion will include possibilities for collaboration, partnerships, or technology licensing that would allow Elcan to exploit such opportunities. This workshop will allow participating companies to discuss the biophotonics market opportunities they see, company programs/technologies directed at creating biophotonic solutions, and the enabling technologies required to fully address the market opportunities. Presentations and discussions will provide insight into market opportunities, the enabling technologies required to address this market, and allow participants who are interested in collaborations or partnerships to think "outside the box" and come up with new and innovative business opportunities.

Presenting from Elcan (div. of Raytheon)

Conrad Stenton, Senior Staff Scientist
John Dunnings, Program Manager
Mark Rugman, Product Manager

Elcan will review the information from this workshop, select potential partners and determine which opportunities are of specific interest for future development and commercialization. Follow-up could take several forms including teleconference, videoconferences and site visits to determine the appropriate vehicle for collaboration.

The International Photonics Commercialization Alliance is undertaking this initiative with the support of its stakeholders including - the NRC, The Infotonics Technology Center, The Boston University Photonics Center, the Consul & Trade Commission, Consulate General of Canada in Buffalo and Boston.
